What the World Food Programme is doing to respond to the Myanmar emergency

Emergency response: WFP reached more than 1 million people with life-saving food and critical nutrition support in 2025. This included food and cash for those affected by a 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar in March 2025, destroying lives, homes and infrastructure.
Nutrition: WFP provides a comprehensive package of nutrition support to pregnant and breastfeeding women and young children aged between 6 months and 5 years. During emergencies, WFP focuses on preventing malnutrition through various interventions, including providing specialized nutritious foods to at-risk groups. WFP also provides food and cash-based nutrition support to people living with HIV and TB and delivers nutrition education and counselling.
Resilience: In areas with relative stability, WFP is creating livelihood opportunities and improving resilience through projects for the development of community assets such as roads, terrace land, irrigation canals, flood-protection dykes and home gardens. These activities create livelihood opportunities and strengthen community resilience to climate change and other shocks. In the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in March 2025, WFP has helped improve communities’ access to markets, conducted site cleaning and implemented measures to mitigate monsoon-related risks such as flooding and landslides.
