What the World Food Programme is doing to respond to the Somalia emergency

Crisis response: Despite immense challenges, WFP remains the backbone of the humanitarian food security response in Somalia. WFP provided emergency cash-based transfers to more than 380,000 people at the onset of worsening drought conditions during 2026, through government-led systems. This allowed people to buy food on local markets, addressing urgent needs and reinforcing national social protection capacity.
Resilience: WFP changes lives in Somalia by helping to build sustainable, long-term resilience at community, state and national level against recurrent shocks like drought and flooding. This includes working with the Government to implement social protection programmes; strengthening climate-smart food systems (for example by training smallholder farmers and linking them to new markets); and developing the capacity of national institutions to sustainably address hunger.
School meals: WFP provides nutritious school meals to more than 100,000 primary school students. The programme injects more than US$750,000 into the economy, buying food locally and supporting farmers and local communities. WFP and the Government are advancing on a transition to nationally led, home-grown school meals.
Logistics: The WFP-led United Nations Humanitarian Air Service and Logistics Cluster transport passengers and essential relief supplies and cargo to 18 destinations across Somalia, including the hardest-to-reach areas, and enabling operations for 45 organizations. Without this enabling service to the wider humanitarian community including the UN and NGOs, people in remote areas would be inaccessible for aid workers.
Government and UN integration: WFP works with all levels of government in alignment with Somalia’s Ninth National Development Plan, the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework, and the Humanitarian Response Plan. One example is WFP’s support for Baxnaano, a government-owned national safety net. WFP’s work is integrated with the broader United Nations, including joint programming with the United Nations Children’s Fund and the Food and Agriculture Organization.
